Next Gen in a not-for-profit Theatre company that was formed after we all met during “Heathers - The Musical” produced by Sale Theatre Company.
During the course of the production, we discovered that 80% of the cast had a recognised disability, mental health issues or both. While this provided its own challenges it created the idea of starting Next Gen to ensure that people of all abilities could participate in theatre, both on stage and as part of the production crew.
Next Gen is excited to bring new experiences to our local community. In addition to theatre productions, Next Gen is working with schools, disability services and participants and youth services to provide customised activities for their participants. We are excited to partner with community groups and organisations to provide the opportunity for everyone, no matter their ability, to be a part of what we do. Theatre can spark discussion and personal reflection about mental illness and disabilities, decrease stigma, build empathy for people living with mental illness and disabilities and even encourage activism.
Next Gen provides opportunities for people of all abilities to work both on stage and behind the scenes. Our training program will facilitate skill building for roles such as sound, lighting, prop and set development, stage management and performance just to name a few. With a passion for people with disabilities and mental health challenges we hope to be able to perform in accessible theatres to remove boundaries that may be present for our cast and production crew.
Next Gen isn’t about making money, it’s about supporting our local community. That’s why we are committed to fundraising for local charities and causes at our shows by donating all profits from programs. It’s our way of giving back and helping others. We will also promote other local companies’ shows across our social media platforms and on our programme’s.
We rely on ticket sales, grants and corporate sponsors to help us support the community.
Upcoming shows will be advertised on our Facebook page and we can customise our service for groups such as schools and support services to put on their own production.
